The whole bro thing and storylines we’ve seen just come off as pure reality TV trash or lowbrow pop culture references to me.
Going to the gym to work out angrily and “throwing a real rager” as the highlight of gameplay? Making a household based on The New Girl and using the word “friend-zoned”? Obama and Kim Jong-un sims? Turning a self sufficient doctor into a creepy mooch bro? Turning an Arabic woman who died when her daughters were children into a white MILF who’s competing with her daughter for a man? Dying of laughter over a man peeing his pants?
This is what they’re choosing to highlight, and it’s awful. And if they think this awfulness is what we want, then why should I expect the rest of it to be good?
Good marketing should not make you think “Oh I can just ignore that when I buy it” and “Maybe they’ll release what I really want in a later EP!” It’s not my job to convince myself to buy the game, and I’m not going to write fanfic in my head about how fun it’s gonna be when I ignore everything that the creators consider the best part.
The majority of the sims fandom is made up of introverts/girls/women, and we don’t seem to be the demographic they’re targeting. The best of the marketing I’ve seen are the Game of Thrones and Pride renders, which are actually things that appeal to me and my friends, but those have been ruined by everything that’s followed them.
